Across Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) Health Board, Pathology is responsible for the provision of clinically led diagnostic services to Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend. All POCT results from blood gas, glucose, urinalysis and pregnancy testing are now captured via a middleware piece of software called POCcelerator. POCcelerator allows the management of POCT processes, technical validity and data governance for all connected POCT analysers, passing results onto the patient record to be reviewed alongside Laboratory and X-Ray results.
ABMU Health Board is leading the way in the UK regarding the capture of POCT data and their aim is to extend this capability across the whole Board. In January 2010 Pathology will be connecting POCT equipment from Swansea Hospitals to POCcelerator in addition to the equipment already connected at Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot.
This will be the largest POCT installation using POCcelerator across Europe when completed with approximately 300 Abbott blood glucose analysers, 31 blood gas analysers (a mixture of Siemens, Radiometer and IL), 25 Clinitek Status (wifi, serial and Ethernet), HemoCues, Coaguchek XS plus and DCA vantage. Their next objective is to be providing POCT analyser connectivity within the primary care setting.
